๐ซ Practical option plays ยท Momentum
Momentum option buying
Wait for a breakout candle on the 5-min chart of the underlying, confirmed by volume. Buy an ATM/slightly-OTM option in the breakout direction; exit on 1-ATR target or breakdown.
Setup
- Chart: 5-min candles on Nifty/Bank Nifty/Sensex or high-momentum stock
- Identify a defined intraday range or a consolidation lasting 30-90 minutes
- Watch for a breakout candle: full-body candle that closes above range high (or below range low) on volume โฅ 1.5ร the average of the last 10 bars
Entry
Buy ATM or 1-strike OTM weekly option in the breakout direction at the CLOSE of the breakout candle. Enter fast โ momentum plays decay quickly.
Exit
Target = 1ร ATR from breakout OR 40-60% profit on the option. Exit fast โ momentum trades reverse just as quickly as they run.
Stop-loss
Back inside the range = exit. On the option itself: 30% of premium.
When it works
- Post-open breakouts (10:00-11:30) with volume confirmation
- Strong-trend intraday days
- Weekly ATM options with high gamma โ small underlying move = large option move
When it fails
- Fake breakouts on low volume โ most common failure mode
- Very late in the session โ momentum trades need runway
- Chop sessions where every candle looks like a breakout
General trading rules that apply
Regardless of the specific setup, these apply to every strategy on this site:
- Never risk more than 2% of your account on a single trade
- Place a hard stop-loss before entering โ no exceptions
- Journal every trade: setup, reason, outcome, one lesson
- After two consecutive losses, stop for the session
- Backtest and paper-trade for a month before deploying real capital
Every strategy here is an educational description of a widely-known technical setup. Past behavior does not guarantee future results. The chart above uses synthetic price data generated for illustration โ real market behavior varies. Backtest, paper-trade, and size responsibly before risking real capital.
