๐ซ Practical option plays ยท Intraday
Combined Option + VWAP
Use VWAP as the intraday trend line. Buy calls only when price is above VWAP with rising momentum; buy puts only when below VWAP. Simple, disciplined intraday option buying.
Setup
- Chart: 5-min or 15-min with VWAP plotted from open
- Define regime: price consistently above VWAP with VWAP sloping up = bullish; opposite = bearish
- Weekly ATM or slightly ITM options โ enough delta to move with the underlying, weekly for cheap premium
Entry
Long call: price closes above VWAP AND price is making higher-highs on the 5-min. Long put: price closes below VWAP AND lower-lows. Enter option at that signal candle's close.
Exit
Exit call when price closes back below VWAP (or reaches next intraday resistance). Exit put on close back above VWAP. Or take 30-50% profit target intraday.
Stop-loss
Fixed 30-40% of premium OR immediate exit when price closes on the wrong side of VWAP.
When it works
- Trending intraday sessions with VWAP acting as clear support/resistance
- Sessions with clear directional bias early โ first hour tells the day
- Weekly ATM options with 2-4 DTE for punchy gamma
When it fails
- Range-bound days where price crosses VWAP repeatedly โ long-option deaths by 1000 cuts
- Very quiet lunch window (12:00-1:30) when VWAP loses meaning
- Very short DTE (< 1 day) where any VWAP re-touch destroys the premium
General trading rules that apply
Regardless of the specific setup, these apply to every strategy on this site:
- Never risk more than 2% of your account on a single trade
- Place a hard stop-loss before entering โ no exceptions
- Journal every trade: setup, reason, outcome, one lesson
- After two consecutive losses, stop for the session
- Backtest and paper-trade for a month before deploying real capital
Every strategy here is an educational description of a widely-known technical setup. Past behavior does not guarantee future results. The chart above uses synthetic price data generated for illustration โ real market behavior varies. Backtest, paper-trade, and size responsibly before risking real capital.
