๐ซ Practical option plays ยท Swing
Swing option buying
Buy monthly ATM/slightly-ITM options in the direction of a multi-day swing. Hold for 3โ7 days; exit on 30โ50% profit target or a break of the swing structure.
Setup
- Chart: daily candles with EMA 20/50 for swing context
- Identify a defined swing setup: pullback in an uptrend to EMA 20 with a bullish reversal candle (or mirror for shorts)
- Use monthly options (25-40 DTE) โ the extra time cushions theta over the multi-day hold
- Choose ATM to slightly-ITM strikes (delta 0.55-0.65) โ enough directional exposure without gamma addiction
Entry
Buy call (bullish swing): after the reversal candle at EMA 20 confirms, enter the option at the next day's open. Buy put: mirror.
Exit
Take profit at 30-50% option gain OR when price closes below the swing low (long) / above the swing high (short). Time-stop: exit after 7 days regardless.
Stop-loss
Fixed 30-40% of premium OR structural stop below the swing low. Whichever hits first.
When it works
- Well-defined swing setups in a trending daily regime
- Adequate DTE (25+ days) so theta doesn't dominate the 3-7 day hold
- Options with reasonable bid-ask (< 3% spread)
When it fails
- Trading swings in a choppy sideways daily regime
- Weekly options for multi-day swings โ theta eats everything
- Extending the hold beyond 7 days hoping for more โ theta accelerates
General trading rules that apply
Regardless of the specific setup, these apply to every strategy on this site:
- Never risk more than 2% of your account on a single trade
- Place a hard stop-loss before entering โ no exceptions
- Journal every trade: setup, reason, outcome, one lesson
- After two consecutive losses, stop for the session
- Backtest and paper-trade for a month before deploying real capital
Every strategy here is an educational description of a widely-known technical setup. Past behavior does not guarantee future results. The chart above uses synthetic price data generated for illustration โ real market behavior varies. Backtest, paper-trade, and size responsibly before risking real capital.
